10 Powerful Questions to Ask Yourself When You Feel Stuck in Life

Have you ever hit a point where everything feels foggy — like you’re moving through life on autopilot, but nothing feels quite right? The hours at work don’t seem to be worth the slog, and you’re feeling disconnected from everyone as well as yourself.

You’re not alone. Many of us, at one point or another, find ourselves stuck. It might show up in your career, relationships, personal growth, or even in the quiet moments alone with your thoughts. This stuckness can feel frustrating, confusing, and even overwhelming.

But here’s the good news: You’re not broken — you’re just at a crossroads. Also you’ve realised how you can listen to your intuition- which often gets louder the more we ignore it. Often the first step toward clarity is getting still and asking the right questions.

Often my clients initially think they want promotions and lush vacations, but when you dig a little further into ‘why’ they want such things, it’s so that they can afford memorable experiences with family, and why? Because they feel bad from spending time away from family. Okay, so the goal is to really spend more quality time with family - how can we work on getting closer to that richness of life without burning out in a job with more work?

One client ended up planning a surprise afternoon off work to spend time with their young children and partner - which after they realised how happy it made the whole family, it ended up being a permanent early finish every second Friday. You see it doesn’t have to be years of career progression and planning to get what you really want.

As a life coach, I help people navigate these moments every day. If you're feeling unsure about your next move, here are 10 powerful questions that can help you reconnect with your inner compass and begin moving forward.

Why Do We Feel Stuck in Life?

Feeling stuck often comes from a disconnect — between what we’re doing and what we actually want. It could be caused by fear, burnout, outdated beliefs, external pressure, or simply a lack of clarity. Sometimes we’re waiting for permission. Other times, we’re too exhausted to make a decision.

That’s where intentional self-reflection comes in. These coaching questions are designed to spark awareness and nudge you toward deeper insight — and eventually, action.

10 Coaching Questions to Help You Get Unstuck

1. What do I truly want right now, and why — not what I should want?

We’re taught to chase goals that sound good on paper. But what you truly want, and why might look very different. This question helps cut through the noise and tune into your own desires.

2. What part of my life feels the most out of alignment?

Is it your work, relationships, health, or something else? Identifying the area that feels “off” is the first step to realigning with what matters most.

3. If fear wasn’t holding me back, what would I do next?

Fear is a powerful blocker — but imagining a life without it can reveal what you really want to pursue. You may not act on it right away, but naming it brings it closer. If you to create space between you and a thought, try this Cognitive Diffusion tool. I like what Elizabeth Gilbert says - “1% more curious than afraid.”

4. What am I avoiding — and why?

We all avoid things: tough conversations, big decisions, even our own feelings. Facing what you’re avoiding with curiosity (not judgment) can uncover powerful insights.

5. What energizes me, and what drains me?

Pay attention to your energy. This question helps you spot patterns — and maybe even people or commitments — that no longer serve you.

6. What would my future self thank me for doing (or not doing) today?

Zooming out to a wider lens helps you prioritise long-term fulfilment over short-term comfort. It's a gentle motivator toward action with meaning.

7. What beliefs am I holding that might not be true anymore?

Our beliefs shape our decisions — but not all of them are still serving us. This question opens the door to rewriting old stories that keep us stuck. You can utilise the work template sheet to explore and challenge these thoughts further.

8. What’s one small step I could take today toward something that matters?

Progress doesn’t require a total overhaul. Small, intentional steps are how real change happens. Start with one. You an also get clear by filling in my Focus Fortnight Program worksheet.

9. Who can support me in this season of my life?

You don’t have to do this alone. Whether it’s a friend, mentor, therapist, or coach — support, accountability and an objective view of someone who knows you well can make all the difference.

10. What do I need to let go of to move forward?

This could be a role, a responsibility, a habit, a story on repeat, or even a version of yourself. Letting go isn’t easy, but it creates space for what’s next.

Moving From Reflection to Action

Taking time to reflect is powerful — but insight without action often leads to more frustration. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the answers yet. Sometimes asking the right questions is the beginning of something new.
